What Does Consistency Actually Mean?

At a bare minimum, consistency means your dog knows and has familiarity with the person showing up at the door. It also means continuity of care: their routine, preferences, care instructions, and the little things we learn about them over time don’t disappear just because a different familiar caregiver is providing the walk.

When I say The Pet Bestie is actively building towards a team of genuine, consistent faces for relationship-based care, I am not advocating for a roster of unfamiliar faces for your dog. I'm advocating for a team of reliable individuals to form continuity: both for you and for your dog. It means vetted, thoughtfully selected folks who are excited about caring for your dog entering your door. We're not there yet, but it's the goal.

The recipe to get to that goal involves building a team of trusted, familiar faces who get to know your dog, follow their established routine and care instructions, and provide the same thoughtful level of care every time.

Some dogs will need slower introduction times and transitions to feel safe, I am very aware of that as a Fear Free Certified professional. It also means working in partnership with you and your dog to reach the goal of your dog having fun, feeling fulfilled, and getting their needs met while you get complete peace of mind. If you look back at my very first blog post, you will see Bella, a direct example of a dog who I know and understand needs time to trust. But now? Now she's the snuggliest, wiggliest girl ever each time I come to the door. I can hear her excitement before I even open the door these days.

Consistently walking her, along with other dogs, teaches me nuances like: where they prefer to do their business, what things they might be scared of (the random pinwheel in someone's garden, a rose bush they've never seen), and what their normal or baseline is. These are the kinds of things we only learn over time while getting to know your dog. The same can absolutely be said for getting to know other people. It really is very similar.

Does the Same Dog Walker Matter Most?

Having the same dog walker can create familiarity, but it isn't the only way to provide consistent care.

This particular blog is all about The Pet Bestie's love language: consistency! What goes into consistency at The Pet Bestie is: familiarity, routine, communication, and care standards. Let's break it down further.

• Familiarity: Your dog knows the people caring for them. Simple as that. New caregivers aren't simply dropped into a visit with a dog they've never built a relationship with.

• Routine: The care instructions and household routines remain consistent (even if quirky), regardless of who's visiting.

• Communication:  Consistency also means paying attention to what's happening in and around your dog's home, and speaking up when something seems unusual. Just last week after a walk I let a client know that it was the second time that week I had smelled gas. Turned out they had a gas leak. Clients receive the same level of detailed and nuanced communication every single time.

• Care standards: The expectations around safety, handling and quality of care don't change depending on which team member arrives. Future team members will be trained around the same care standards I've built The Pet Bestie on.

I built the Pet Bestie to be a relationship-based business that actually cares. When we talk about building a team, what that means is infusing the way that I have built my business into every single person who will work with us. It means defining our standards, what we value, and how we deliver the same standard of service every single time.

7. Will the service meet my particular dog's needs?

8. Does the service prioritize recurring schedules or primarily provide one-time/as-needed walks?
